Squier is a sub brand of Fender guitars. I think at the age of 12, your son should be able to get by on the standard Fender scale length, and if it's a little bit of a stretch for the fingers, it'll probably be a good thing as far as finger exercise goes. If he's only into heavy rock guitar, then maybe an Epiphone G 400 or Epiphone Les Paul would be a better choice. I see a guitar as an investment in myself, so I tend to look a little beyond the absolute beginner electric guitars.
